About The Author (You)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR (YOU) Admit it, you’ve struggled over writing your bio. I know you've. We all have. But there’s hope, believe me. A quick, one-paragraph bio is one thing each creator needs, but there’s nobody right way to do it, no “will need to have” info, so it requires virtually as much creativity because the novel it accompanies. First off, that is your bio and nobody can (or anyway, nobody ought to) inform you what it ought to or shouldn’t say. Not snug addressing your private life? Then don’t. No matter what I say as this publish goes on, overlaying all that is that you need to pay attention to your individual consolation zone. That having been mentioned, I suppose a great author bio is written first so the tone of the bio matches the book, the genre, and/or the viewers. If your guide is a severe, adult fantasy full of political intrigue and tragic death, skip the funny, clever bio. I know this one from onerous expertise. I once wrote a fairly serious navy SF story for an anthology, th en offered this fully mismatched and sick-advised bio, which I totally regret and need I might take again: Philip Athans. What can I say about Philip Athans? Women want to be with him. Men wish to be him. He currently lives in the Seattle area with a couple of actually fortunate gals. And yes, he's one rattling nice lookin’ man. However true that could be, it didn’t match the story, the rest of the anthology, and the style in any respect. So yeah, know your viewers and write appropriately. Here’s my “commonplace” bioâ€"you could have seen it in a single kind or another somewhere before. I maintain this on my laptop, and paste it in almost every time I’m asked for a bio, however not exactly every time. Again, I switch things up relying on the time, place, tone, and so on. Philip Athans is the founding companion of Athans & Associates Creative Consulting, and the New York Times finest-selling author of Annihilationand greater than a dozen other fantasy and horror books inc luding The Guide to Writing Fantasy & Science Fiction and the soon-to-be-launched Writing Monsters. Born in Rochester, New York he grew up in suburban Chicago, where he revealed the literary journal Alternative Fiction & Poetry. His blog, Fantasy Author’s Handbook, is updated every Tuesday, and you may observe him on Twitter @PhilAthans. He makes his residence in the foothills of the Washington Cascades, east of Seattle. This starts with my name. Do that. If you’re a part of an anthology, for instance, this makes it easier for the writer to fold your bio in to the present textual content with out adding a headline. And anyway, that is, by definition, about you, so why not own that up entrance? The subsequent factor is “what I’m doing proper now.” Most of the writers I know have some sort of “day job”â€"as long as you aren’t ashamed of it, go forward and tell us that, especially if what you do for a living, or did for a living, helps reinforce your “credentials” f or the guide at hand. If you’re writing navy SF, as an example, and can say that you simply’re a retired Navy SEAL then by all means, sure, do that! And your writer photo could be a “selfie,” like this one! Next comes previous credit, which serves two simultaneous purposes: It says “I’m a professional, take me seriously” on the similar time saying “Buy my different stuff.” If you don’t have any previous credits, okay. Everyone starts someplace. Don’t fret, just depart that out or higher but, personal it: This is [your name]’s first novel. You’ll by no means be able to say that again! Then I mixed where I’m from with a much older credit score. This is all optionally available, and truthfully I’m undecided why I talked about a literary journal that revealed its fifth and last concern in 1987. But there it is. Then I promote slightly more. I send folks right here and to my Twitter account so that they may turn into considered one of my Unholy Minions. If y ou don’t have Unholy Minions you’re in massive bother. They’re the only individuals who read anymore. But critically, some kind of social media/internet presence isn't optionally available, so for the sake of your profession, a minimum of tell us you’re on Facebook! Then I like to end with the tiniest bit of private the place-is-he-now, telling all people the final space in which I reside. I assume the place I live is a pretty attention-grabbing place. If you reside someplace uninteresting, think about what else you possibly can “reveal” here. Do you've children (and are you okay telling that to the world?). Do you've a cat? A canine? A collection of . . . one thing that gained’t make you look like a crazed maniac? Do you've a hobby of any kind? Just like your day job, the place you reside, your hobbies and interests, and so on, might be of interest to your readers in the event that they tie again to the subject material of the e-book. Does one of the characters in you r e-book endure from Alzheimer’s Disease and you helped look after a relative who fell sufferer to that terrible disease in real life? It’s not exploitive to say that, it helps your readers know that your presentation of that character is honest. On a much lighter note, do your characters experience and raise horses? If so, do you? Do they have a bloodhound and you breed and show bloodhounds? Is it set in your home city, or a city you as soon as lived it? Any and all of those connections might help breathe some life into your bio. I generally tell folks that I’m a lifelong SF/fantasy fan, a lifelong Trekkie, and a first technology (D&D) gamer . . . because all of these issues are true and tend to say, “Phil isn’t just trying to cash in on the Harry Potter craze, he really likes these things!” And that’s not a foul message to ship (as long as it’s true). Genre readers just like the genres they learn. Who knew, proper? â€"Philip Athans About Philip Athans Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:

Tap Into the Hidden Job Market to Find and Define Your Dream Job - Hallie Crawford

Tap Into the Hidden Job Market to Find and Define Your Dream Job - Hallie Crawford Most people have heard of the hidden job market, and unfortunately I still find that not enough of those people have actually taken the advice about tapping into it for their job search. If you are one of those, it is time to jump on board. If you have not heard the term, the hidden job market is the word used to describe the unadvertised jobs that companies do not openly post or publicly advertise. They are the jobs that can be secured only through networking, recruiters, or the company creating a position for a specific employee for example. The kicker is thatmost jobs are landed through the hidden job market; up to 80%, according to some statistics. Networking is a critical piece to your job search if you are in transition. What many people do not realize is that it is important to leverage the same tools you would use to tap into the hidden job market when you are defining your career path as well. Networking and informational interviews are a critical piece to helping you narrow down your career options and defining what would be the best path for you. Here is some advice on how to begin to utilize both of these in your search for your dream job. 1. Find people, not jobs. This goes for both job searching and defining your ideal career path. Turn your search on its head and focus on finding people to network with, not job openings. The more you do that, the better connections you will make, the more people you will meet, and the broader and more solid your network will become, enhancing your chances of landing a job (and the right job). For defining your direction, the more people you can speak to in order to learn about the industries you are considering, the better. You will gain firsthand insight into what a typical day is like, what skills are required, and how to gain entrée in the field from people who have been there and done that. Conduct as many informational interviews as possible to find out if your choices are the right ones before you make the leap. 2.  Ask the right questions. When you are networking and conducting informational interviews, ask people about two critical pieces (at a minimum) to a fulfilling career direction. One is the tangible element of talents and skills. Make sure you are qualified for the career path you are considering. Will it make use of your talents and skills? Will you be good at the job? It has to be realistic for it to be a fit, especially because studies have shown that if people are not using their natural talents at a job, they will be unfulfilled. A second important factor to consider is your values and the values of the organization. Do they fit and mesh well together? The intangible elements of a career path are just as important to consider as the tangible. Will you be happy in this industry? Will it fit with your personality type? Find out if this is the case by learning more about the industry through informational interviews. 3.  Be prepared. Even if you are conducting informational interviews for the purpose of learning more as opposed to landing a job, you need to be prepared. Have your resume updated. Prepare an elevator speech so you can introduce yourself confidently, explaining your background and what you bring to the table along with the fact that you are researching job ideas to learn more. Be honest about the position you are in; that you are investigating ideas and not necessarily applying for jobs yet. People will understand and the better prepared you are to tell them what you need, the more they can help you. The bottom line is you need to keep in mind that leveraging your network and the hidden job market is still the best way to not only land a new job, but to further clarify your career direction. People in the industry will know more than anyone else what it is really like to work in that field. So use that resource as much as possible. And remember, the more specific you are with your career search, the more successful you will be. Please Share This

Tattoo and the interview process

Tattoo and the interview process Tattoo retrospective Correct tattoo placement for the interview process Tattoo retrospective I wanted to post an update to my recent thoughts on Tattoos and the interview process. After further reflection and a bit of insight provided to me by a close friend of a tattooed son and a daughter, I realized that there are some decisions that I am not going to change. Ever. This is not a reflection on the son and daughter or on the parents, but more my communication style and the decision-making process. My parents gave me a lot of advice and asked me to avoid a lot of things growing up. My parents also forbid me to do a lot of things, but I plowed ahead and did them anyway. In some cases the stronger the stance someone took on an issue the more motivated I was to resist or prove them wrong. Bell bottom jeans, a lowered Honda with an oversized spoiler and neon lights, and of course my K-Pop haircut phase. The more they said no, no, and no, the more I said, watch this. I knew I took a strong position on the Tattoo and the Interview Process post. It is because I have seen employees in the workplace of ALL ages and generations (including 20 something’s) have negative reactions to body art when it comes to interviews and first impressions. But not just interviews and first impressions.  I have seen people do amazing work, and then a tattoo was revealed and impressions changed completely.  Fair?  Right?  Probably not, but it happens. I was trying my absolute hardest to communicate this and in my effort, some would say I drew a line in the sand. A line drawn in the sand is usually challenge and meant to be crossed. I should have known better. I may have come across so hard-nosed that I lost some credibility. Lesson learned, crow eaten. In my initial post, my goal was to pass along the negative reactions I have seen behind closed doors time and time again in response to the tattoo and the interview process. As a leader in various HR departments both Corporate and startup, I have been witness to managers going crazy behind closed doors. These are reactions that the candidate will never see or hear about, and reactions that ultimately decline candidates. If someone is considering a tattoo, I will no longer run around with my hands waving in the air screaming hysterically about how this can kill the interview process.  I wont shriek like a high maintenance woman standing on a chair circled by cheese-eating rodents. Next time, I will just ask that you consider getting your tattoo in a place that will NOT be seen in work clothes. I will actually whisper it so you are forced to lean in closer to me and pay attention. Here is where I am OK with a tattoo:   inner thigh, your ass, or below your waist. Not on the small of your back tramp stamp, ass antlers, tramp-too, style. Think about your company summer parties and what you may be wearing. When I say below the waist, I mean think low-rise jeans below the waist. Parents may be cringing because we just went from what was thought of as a tasteful and symbolic tattoo to less respectful, and perhaps downright dirty. When we think of a tattoo on the inner thigh, or below the waist, those are not visions of sugar plums dancing through our heads. I realize I am not going to change the decision to mutila. . .I mean get a tattoo, so I want to work with what I may be able to influence. If you are going to get a tattoo and are early in your career, please consider getting it in a place that is not only discreet, but going to be invisible to others that may not know, appreciate, or understand the symbolism or importance of your art.   More than likely, the person that is making the hiring decision or has some influence on your career is going to be an older generation and they may not be as open-minded as you are. Dont get me wrong, I would love to get a tattoo myself, but I have seen too many reactions behind closed doors.  In a down economy, hiring manager gets very picky when there are a lot of candidates. The mindset is that there are plenty of candidates out there, find me someone perfect.   So, to the young people I offended in round 1, I sit here eating crow.  Please think discreet when you take your seat in that parlor chair. See you at the after party, HRNasty nasty: an unreal maneuver of incredible technique, something that is ridiculously good, tricky and manipulative but with a result that can’t help but be admired, a phrase used to describe someone who is good at something. “He has a nasty forkball. A few companions might be incredible for gatherings and fun, yet they should not be assisting with the meeting. Approach that one genuine companion you know, the person who offers you their fair input and is continually ready to assist. Genuine companions aren't reluctant to offend you with reality and offer obtuse thoughts. Pick your companions dependent on: Experience. The best assistance in getting ready for a meeting originates from companions with the board, enlisting, recruiting and HR experience. They have experience choosing up-and-comers and performing interviews. Trustworthiness. A few companions mention to you what you need to hear. This isn't satisfactory during meeting practice. Ask proficient companions who aren't reluctant to express their genuine thoughts and offer gruff guidance. Preparing. Experts who have undergrad or graduate level preparing are increasingly adroit in examining your reactions and giving instructed studies. Accessibility. Alright, so you've discovered a companion who is experienced, fair and very much prepared. However, do they have the opportunity to support you? Try not to ask companions who are immersed with ventures and cutoff times of their own. Keep in mind, they have lives and obligations also. Additionally avoid companions who continually break arrangements or are late for occasions. Planning for the false meeting. Treat your fake meeting like it's the genuine article. This is an activity to make getting ready for a meeting a breeze. Pay attention to it, and request that your companion do likewise. Get your work done and get ready for the gathering by exploring the business and position. On the off chance that your companion is happy to go well beyond, solicit them to cause a rundown from inquiries to pose to you during your fake meeting or give them ones dependent on your examination in the event that they don't have the opportunity. Give them a duplicate of your resume too. Except if your companion has broad experience talking with up-and-comers, they should seriously mull over looking at a couple of online assets early. Glassdoor and Monster both extend to online journals for employment opportunity searchers and businesses. These articles will enable your companion to make a progressively proficient setting during the false meeting. Make a rundown of things for your companion to scrutinize and look out for, including the inquiries you experienced difficulty replying, non-verbal communication that sent an inappropriate impression and the length of your answers. Pick your top regions first, and request that they center around these points. Be that as it may, instruct them to don't hesitate to make notes about territories they notice. Propose a couple of inquiries for them to keep in the rear of their psyche, as: Did the meeting subject welcome me by last name? (Mr. or on the other hand Mrs./Ms. Smith) Is it safe to say that they were dressed for the meeting? (slacks, dress shirt and tie for men; pants suit or dress for ladies) Did their voice tremble during any inquiries? (hacking, gulping, and so on.) Did an inquiry make them apprehensive or reluctant? (Stammering, long delay, and so forth.) Was there any negative non-verbal communication? (for example crossing arms, moving in seat, covering mouth, and so forth.) Directing the counterfeit meeting. Treat the counterfeit meeting equivalent to you would a real gathering with the employing chief. Be not kidding during your meeting practice and don't giggle at your companion's supervisor voice or treat it like an easygoing home base. Try not to address your companion by their first name, and utilize the suitable prefix with their name (for example Miss, Mrs., Mr. or on the other hand Dr.). Practice each area of the meeting independently. Does your CV pass the seven second test

Does your CV pass the seven second test by Sandy Purewal What does your CV say about you? When it comes to applying for new roles, you don’t have long to impress. In fact, studies show that recruiters spend somewhere between five and seven seconds on average looking at a candidate’s CV. That’s less than the time it takes to boil a kettle (think about that the next time you make a cup of tea).So how can you ensure your application lands in the ‘yes’ pile with such little time to impress? Here’s our guide on passing the seven second CV test:Keep it shortCVs are never one-size-fits all. Most recruiters say two pages is spot on, but it all depends on how much information you have to share. However, any more than three will be a definite turn-off.The key is to ‘cut the fat’. Ask yourself the question, ‘is this sentence relevant to the role that I’m applying for?’ If you find yourself saying no, then it shouldn’t make the final cut.And when it comes to your qualifications be specific. Add start an d end dates, qualification types and grades. You don’t need to add all of your qualifications either. At least two or three will usually suffice. For example, if you have an MBA, a business degree, A Levels and GCSES, you may find that you can exclude GCSEs and A Levels from your CV.How to keep your CV short and sweetWhich parts of my education should I include in my CV?Capture the reader’s attentionNo matter what job you’re applying for, always tailor your CV to include relevant examples showing the recruiter that you’re right for the role.If you have a specific job in mind, then even better. Use your CV to match up with the job spec and show the recruiter that you’re a good match â€" not to mention dedicated enough to really work on your application. And if you find that your experience doesn’t exactly marry up with the job description, don’t panic. Take some time to think about transferrable skills and show that you’re willing, able and equipped to handle the dutie s at hand.CV advice: how to stand out from the crowdFollow a logical, easy to navigate layoutA good use of formatting is vital to a successful CV.Choose an easy-to-read structure, with clear headings, and highlight key points by using bullet points to display the information. Place emphasis on the information you want employers to see first, and always use a logical order throughout. For example, if you haven’t got a lot of previous experience, focus on your personal statement, qualifications and skills instead. If you have done a similar role, leave your education details to later on.This will allow recruiters to find what they’re looking for quickly, and help make the most of the precious seconds that a recruiter takes to comb through your CV.Don’t bury your key points in layers of waffle.CV layout dos and don’tsCV layout examples  Ditch the clichés Nothing’s more likely to make a recruiter switch off than a generic application. And, even though you might think phrases li ke ‘excellent team player’ and ‘good communication skills’ are essential, all they end up doing is make your CV look like everyone else’s â€" something which could have dire consequences when a recruiter scans your CV.Instead, keep things positive, and always back up your attributes with real examples. After all, ‘increased revenue by X’ sounds a lot better than simply saying you’re a hard worker.Recruiters are just as bored of reading the same old stock phrases as you are of writing them. What words should I use on my CVFive lines that are killing your CV    Need more CV advice? It takes an employer just seven seconds to save or reject a job applicant’s CV. Motivation Yourself and Others By Smiling at Strangers

Motivation Yourself and Others By Smiling at Strangers This week I had three 5:30 am telecons, worked until 5 pm  and then spent the night at school working on group projects.   You have no idea how much I was looking forward to this fabulous weekend!  Lets just say that this  was my motto for the week.  This nonstop week also posed some interesting questions for me. Two random men on the street made me realize that I  look like I dread going to work which made me re-examine  if I am really being present. As I  walked into work on Tuesday, a man told me that I looked like it was Monday and that I should look happier because I am one day closer to Friday.   Thank you, sir. On Thursday as I was walking across the street  into work, a man yelled out from his truck Do you like your job?!   I yelled back SURE! and then thought about his question for the rest of the day.   These two interactions in the same week made me realize that I dont think I am taking my own advice.   I know I have a lot of stuff on my mind but I dont want someone who doesnt even know me to think I am unhappy.   I dont want their  first impression of me to be tired, stressed and overworked (even though I am)   Do you?!! [Related Post:  4 Ways to Create a Habitat for Happiness at Work] So what I learned this week is that it is not just important to be present, awake and alive at meetings with the boss and your co-workers but also strangers on the street.   Who knows, maybe you can make someone elses day. Take the Time To Smile at Strangers It Could Change Both Your Days! The blog thinksimplenow offers this advice about smiling at work, Living under a routine, we can easily be in a zombie-like state. We zip into work quickly following the same routines we’ve habituated. Our target is to get to work, and we can sometimes forget about the people around us. So, the challenge is to practice beaming with smile as you come into work. Smile genuinely with people you meet. Be completely pleased to see them. Make it a focus for the day, to bring more happiness into the lives of others. Ask them genuinely and infused with energy, “How are ya?” “How was your weekend?” Watch the smiles surface on their face. Another website I came across when I googled Smile at Strangers was the blog Living Life Out Loud where I found a  story of what happened when  the writer  smiled at a stranger. One day when I was waiting in line for my prescriptions at Walgreens, an older man was sitting in a chair by the line. I looked up and caught his eye and smiled. He smiled back and started talking to me. When I picked up my order, I started to leave and I stopped to just say goodbye. He thanked me for talking to him because he is used to being ignored in his old age. He said it made his day to know there were nice people out there. All I did was smile, and have small talk with him for at the most 2 minutes. Think about what your smile could do for someone… I think this story sums it up.   You never know who might need a little smile from you to brighten up their day!   Do you smile at strangers?
